TOPIC: UNDERSTANDING THE OTHER SIDE OF WISDOM
Scripture: 1 Kings 3: 9. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
Beloved, I welcome you to another Moment of Daily Encounter! Yesterday we established that the other side of Wisdom is Understanding and we close up on how to get Understanding.
However, before we delve into how to get understanding, I will like to briefly share with us the importance of understanding.
Why you need understanding?
Please note that the matter of understanding is a spirit! Hence it is an operation of the Holy Spirit. We have earlier on established that wisdom is a spirit, so also her twin brother – understanding is a spirit.
The following are reasons why you need understanding :
1. An understanding heart is what is required to exist in wisdom. An understanding heart is also known as the spirit of understanding. So when God was imparting Solomon in the dream, He gave him a wise and understanding heart.
The Bible said:
1 Kings 3: 12. Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
2. Wisdom cannot operate maximally without understanding! Solomon understand this very well that wisdom alone is not enough hence in Solomon’s request to God he didn’t asked for wisdom rather it was an understanding heart. And the Bible said the speech please God (1Kg.3:10):
1 Kings 3: 9. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? 1 Kings 3: 10. And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now from the above scripture, it stand out that the importance of understanding is that Wisdom can not function maximally without understanding!
I will illustrate this point with handset; So many of us have handset! You will all agree with me that your handset/device is useless without battery!
Infact, if the battery is dead, the handset will still not function until it is charge up because the handset/device is designed to function with battery. The reason for plugging your device/handset on electricity is to charge the battery of your device.
Some charge up their battery with the provision made inside their car. Some with a power bank, by all means the battery must be charged to keep on enjoying your device/handset. The case of no battery or having a battery that is dead can also be liken to having a riffle without bullet!
Similarly, you can not operate in wisdom if you neglect the place of understanding. What enable your wisdom to function properly is an understanding heart!
God did not give Solomon wisdom only because wisdom only is not enough, He gave him both wisdom and understanding.
This is why the Bible said;
Proverbs 16: 16. How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver !
You will observed the scripture compared Wisdom to Gold while Understanding to Silver! Both silver and gold is required for our every day Life. Don’t pursue wisdom and forsake understanding
3. Every wisdom stand on the legs of understanding! Have you ever see a man without legs, he is limited in certain areas of life. The same way a man with wisdom without understanding have no legs too.
This is why the Bible said:
Proverbs 4: 5. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. 7. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Observed the scripture says Get wisdom, get understanding – meaning get both of them! They are intrinsically knitted together.
In conclusion, Understanding is a spirit that must be covet like you do the spirit of wisdom.
Understanding is what helps Wisdom to function maximally and it is what provide legs for wisdom to stand! Therefore, make every effort to get understanding because wisdom alone without Understanding will not deliver the victory you desire.
Remember this : Heaven is real and hell is real! The decision of where to spend eternity with God begins now! Give your heart to Jesus today!
