Solomon, the third and final king of the united nation of Israel, followed in the footsteps of King Saul and King David. He was born to David and Bathsheba, the latter of whom had been the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Tragically, David had ordered Uriah’s death to conceal his affair with Bathsheba while Uriah was away fighting in a war. Despite this dark beginning, Solomon went on to achieve significant accomplishments.
He authored notable works such as the Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, and a significant portion of the Book of Proverbs. Solomon ruled over Israel for a span of 40 years. In his early reign, he forged a strategic alliance with Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, by marrying his daughter. This alliance was marked by the construction of his palace, the Temple of the Lord, and the fortification of Jerusalem’s walls.
Solomon’s leadership was not without its challenges. He embraced political marriages and polygamy, decisions that went against the divine will and ultimately carried heavy consequences for him and the nation of Israel. Despite these flaws, Solomon displayed reverence for the Lord, as evidenced by his adherence to the teachings of his father, David.
In a significant event, Solomon traveled to Gibeon, a prominent high place, to make sacrifices. Here, the Lord appeared to him in a dream and offered him a blank check, asking what he desired. Solomon, recognizing his youth and inexperience, humbly requested wisdom to govern his people justly. His wisdom request pleased God, who not only granted him wisdom but also bestowed upon him riches, honor, and a long life, as long as he remained obedient.
Solomon’s worshipful response to this divine encounter involved offering sacrifices, celebrating with a feast, and acknowledging his dependence on the Lord. His wisdom was further demonstrated in a complex case involving two prostitutes and their dispute over a living child. Solomon’s astute judgment in this matter showcased his unique understanding of human nature and earned him a reputation as an exceptionally wise ruler.
Through his actions and decisions, Solomon became renowned as the wisest man of his time, attracting awe and respect from his subjects and beyond. His legacy of wisdom and leadership left an indelible mark on the history of Israel, even as his flaws and mistakes served as cautionary lessons.
