Now, let’s dive into my YouTube journey. I embarked on this adventure back in December 2017, posting videos one by one. My initial content revolved around makeup tutorials, a passion I developed thanks to my sister-in-law, who introduced me to a treasure trove of makeup tutorials. These videos were a gateway for me into the world of YouTube, and I soon realized that I had learned so much from the platform. It was time for me to give back and create content to help others like me who wanted to learn. And so, my YouTube journey began with daily makeup content, but the road ahead proved to be challenging.
For nearly two years, my growth was painfully slow, and my subscriber count struggled to break the 500 mark. It was a testing time, but I never allowed myself to become discouraged. I understood that everyone’s journey on YouTube is unique, and success comes at different paces. It was in late 2020 and early 2021 that I experienced a significant boost in subscribers. The shift occurred when I began creating vlogs, a format that I found more manageable compared to the intricate setup and preparation required for makeup tutorials.
I noticed that my hair-related videos garnered a lot of attention, quickly amassing views and subscribers. This newfound focus propelled my channel’s growth, leading to the momentous achievement of reaching 1,000 subscribers. It was an unforgettable milestone, one that took me nearly four years to attain.
Now, let’s discuss the process of getting paid on YouTube. First and foremost, you need a YouTube channel, which can easily be created with a Gmail account. Download the YouTube app, go to your profile, and create your channel. It’s a straightforward process. Next, start producing content you’re passionate about. As your channel grows, you’ll become eligible to apply for the YouTube Partner Program. This program requires your channel to have at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours within one year.
Once your channel meets these criteria, YouTube will review it for approval. After joining the program, ads will start appearing on your videos, allowing you to monetize your content. However, keep in mind that you won’t receive payments immediately. YouTube operates on a monthly payment system with a minimum payout threshold of $100. You’ll only receive funds once you’ve surpassed this threshold. It’s important to note that YouTube doesn’t pay out less than $100 in a given month but accumulates your earnings until you reach that amount.
My personal journey involved hitting 1,000 subscribers in January, but I didn’t reach 4,000 watch hours until July. Monetization began counting in August. Unfortunately, by the end of August, I hadn’t earned $100. However, this process taught me that YouTube earnings can fluctuate greatly. Some videos generate only a few dollars, while others perform exceptionally well. Your monthly earnings are variable, but they accumulate until they surpass the $100 threshold.
One crucial step in this process was setting up a dollar account, as suggested by YouTube. Although some Nigerian YouTubers mentioned the possibility of receiving payments in Naira, I followed YouTube’s guidance and opened a dollar account. Additionally, I had to provide tax information since I’m a Nigerian YouTuber, not subject to U.S. taxation. The tax rate for my earnings was around 30%.
Finally, on the 21st of a particular month, I received a credit of $85.42 from Google Ireland Limited. This was a portion of my accumulated earnings, as I had not yet reached the $100 threshold. I was overjoyed to see this money come through and realized that consistency and quality content had led to this accomplishment.
To sum it up, being a YouTuber is no walk in the park, and earnings can fluctuate. However, with determination, patience, and a passion for your content, you can achieve your goals.
