Part 1.
One of the keys to a successful marriage that cannot be over emphasized is the ability to forgive. When you see a successful marriage, it does not reflect the absence of offence, rather it is the willingness of both parties to forgive each other over and over again.
Some key lessons to learn about forgiveness are:
1. UNDERSTANDING THE PLACE OF DIFFERENCES
No two people are the same. A marriage is made up of two people from different backgrounds with different values, upbringing, culture, interests, mind-set and sometimes temperaments. But an understanding of these differences helps you compliment and accommodate each other.
2. GIVE ROOM FOR OFFENCES
Love is not the absence of disagreements and as such your differences will often times lead to friction. This is inevitable, however, these disagreements do not undermine your love and value for each other.
3. BE MATURE
Maturity gives you the ability to look away. It’s immature to react to every slight thrown at you by your partner. Maturity helps you manage your emotions, look away or have civil discussions when necessary and ultimately forgive. With maturity, pride takes the backstage and forgiveness comes easily.
4. FORGIVENESS SHOULD COME SWIFTLY AND EASILY
There is no medal for holding on to grudges for the longest. This creates even more rift and offence between a couple especially when one party finds it difficult to let go easily.
5. FORGIVE IN ADVANCE
Always remember that offence is inevitable in marriage. Forgiveness will come easily when each party accepts this and agrees to forgive in advance. When this is done, it becomes easy to address issues when they arise before they get out of control.
