His educational journey began with a first leaving school certificate, after which he pursued a degree in Surveying at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Not stopping there, Sanwo-Olu went on to attain an MBA from UNILAG as well. His quest for knowledge led him to prestigious institutions such as the John F. Kennedy School of Government, the London Business School, and the Lagos Business School. He is recognized as an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) and a fellow of the Nigeria Institute of Training and Development (NITAD).

 

Professional Career

Sanwo-Olu’s professional career unfolded as he ventured into the financial sector, serving as a treasurer at Lead Merchant Bank from 1994 to 1997. Subsequently, he contributed his expertise to the United Bank of Africa (UBA) as the head of the foreign money market. His managerial roles extended to First Inland Bank (now First City Monument Bank), and he served as the chairman of Baywatch Group Limited.

Entry into Politics

In 2003, Sanwo-Olu embarked on his political journey as a Special Adviser on Corporate Matters to the former deputy governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro. His trajectory continued with roles such as acting commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget and later commissioner for commerce and industry under then-Governor Bola Tinubu. Notably, he became the Commissioner of Establishment, Training, and Personnel after the 2007 general elections. During Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s tenure in 2016, he assumed the role of Managing Director of Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC).

Public Sector Achievements

Sanwo-Olu’s tenure as governor, which commenced in 2019, has been marked by notable achievements. He oversaw the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) Privatization projects and played a pivotal role in establishing the Lagos Security Trust Fund, LAGBUS System, and the Control and Command Centre in Alausa, Ikeja.

In 2015, Sanwo-Olu secured the governorship under the APC, garnering 739,445 votes, defeating Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 206,141 votes. His exemplary service has earned him various accolades, including the Platinum Award from the Lagos State Public Service Club, the 2009 Best in Human Capital Development Award from the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), and other merit awards from esteemed organizations.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu is happily married to Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, a medical practitioner and administrator. The couple is blessed with four children. Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu obtained her MBBS degree from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA).
