The 21st Century Smartphone: More Than a Gadget

In the 21st century, smartphones have become indispensable tools for both business and personal life. On the 23rd of September, as I was returning from church, I decided to visit my Uncle and say hello. Little did I know that this visit would lead to a realization of just how crucial my smartphone had become.

While conversing with my Uncle, I received several WhatsApp notifications. Without hesitation, I reached for my phone to check and respond. Unfortunately, my phone slipped from my grasp and hit the ground, causing what I initially thought was just another minor mishap. Little did I know, this was different; this fall would be a significant turning point for my device.

Upon picking it up, I discovered that the inner screen was damaged, rendering the phone nearly unusable. All the screens displayed upside down, leaving me deeply concerned. As someone who relies heavily on their smartphone, this was a troubling predicament. I engage in various activities, including content creation, blogging, and even rabbit farming. My phone serves as a vital tool for these endeavors, connecting me with my audience and customers through WhatsApp, content, and YouTube videos.

Being without my phone meant being out of touch with my customers, potentially leading to financial losses. It was then that I realized that in the 21st century, our phones have evolved into our personal offices and are integral to our daily lives, even if we don’t always realize it.

In a humorous twist of fate, my Uncle suggested I visit the Glo office to have my phone fixed. Although I had reservations, I followed his advice, only to discover that the Glo office did not handle phone repairs. Feeling somewhat foolish, I left, pondering my next move.

Considering Femtech I.T. Center, a place I had previously relied on for tech repairs, I headed in that direction. However, destiny had other plans. I ran into an old friend who specialized in point-of-sale (POS) services. When I inquired about fixing my phone at Femtech, he suggested an alternative – a tech store nearby that focused solely on tech devices and appliances.

I rushed to the suggested tech store, where I met with an experienced engineer. After learning about my phone’s brand, he informed me that the repair would cost a staggering N17,000. I was taken aback; this was not in my budget. However, I had no choice; I needed my phone operational to conduct financial transactions. I reluctantly agreed, promising to return with the funds.

The engineer worked diligently, even obtaining a new screen. In just about 1 hour and 30 minutes, my phone was restored to its former glory. It felt like a medical miracle. I made a few phone calls, combined with the N5,000 in my Kuda bank account, and managed to pay for the repairs. My joy was restored, and I left the store with a fully functioning phone.

This experience made me reflect on the significance of smartphones and technology in our lives today. The role of phones, social media, and technological innovations cannot be overstated. They have transformed our daily existence, making our world more accessible and efficient. As artificial intelligence continues to advance, we can only expect even greater transformations in the future.
